Meteorite Men – The Dry Lake Bed!

UPDATE: 10:57pm Feb 17th – Just finished watching the show tonight… I must say I’m quite disappointed. I really expected much more from the show than 500+ meteorites and the tiny 699 gram carbonaceous meteorite which is super rare and only the second one found outside of Antarctica. Hmmmph, that’s nothing… Anyone can find 500 meteorites on one hunt right?

Wow Sonny! Congrats on the carbonaceous, You rock! Steve, Geoff you guys kinda rock too… Sonny’s got you beat on this one. ;)

I have to say this is one of the best episodes of the Meteorite Men thus far.

Only one problem. Now you have to top it! Can you do it?

——————————–

The Meteorite Men are on tonight with special guest and professional meteorite hunter Sonny Clary. this promises to be a great show!

Meteorite Men

The Dry Lake Bed, Nevada

TV-PG (L)
Science Channel – 9pm

Dry lake beds are a great place to find new, never before discovered meteorites. The terrain of the bed provides spectacular visuals and high-speed action as the guys cover as much ground as possible, looking for dark rocks against the light colored sand.

Make sure you tune in.

Great show! However what is confusing is that they said at the beginning of the show that the meteorites on this dry lake bed would not be attracted to a magnet. Yet all their finds were attracted to a magnet. Also the site was secret yet they showed it clearly on a map of Nevada at least twice. From what I could see of the map it looks like it’s around the Franklin Dry Lake with the Ruby Mts in the distance to the west. However the map shown could have been just a diversion to throw off treasure hunters. All and all a very good show.

The “non-magnetic” meteorite they were referring to was the rare 699g carbonaceous meteorite Sonny found before this trip was filmed and he was referring to when he found it. The meteorites found on this trip/show were ordinary chondrites. There was also a small mistake on the show caption that called these meteorites “common chondrites” though technically they are common, the most used term is ordinary chondrite and these type of meteorites typically are in fact magnetic due to their iron content. The carbonaceous meteorite Sonny found before is not. As for the map and the dry lake, well, maybe they did throw in a “fake” map, maybe they didn’t, but the thing is who’s gonna go out there? ;)

Well I know where the lake bed is that they showed on the map and I and a friend are going there this weekend. I’ll let you know if we find anything. Wish I knew who is buying them in case we find some.

    • admin says:

That is if the map they showed was the actual location of the hunt. It’s possible they put that map out there to throw would be meteorite hunters off the trail.

I work all over the Great Basin in remote areas. The map they showed is not the place where they were hunting meteorites. Compare the map on Google Earth to the background in the shots. The two do not jive. I have some thoughts as to the actual location based on the terrain of the mountains in the background shots. If anybody else is interested in figuring out this puzzle, please contact me (2 heads are better than 1).

Well guess I won’t know if they are on the dry lake bed I went to this weekend for a few months. There were 4 inches of snow on the lake bed. Temp was below 20 degrees as I climbed into the sleeping bag in a tent at 8:30 and the same when I climbed out in the morning. It snowed on and off all day and nite. It seems the entire state (except the south) was in a snow storm from the Sierras to the east state line. I’ll go try again when it drys out.

    Kane,

I just saw the show, today.
I’d be interested in figuring out the location.
Do you live in the Alamo, NV area?

    • Kane says:

      KPTU,

I live in Reno but you will never believe this, I am working in Alamo right now. I will be working here every other week for the next 3 months. Send me an email at kanehell@hotmail.com.

I live clear down near Yerington, NV it was quite a drive to get there. I want to be sure the weather is good before I go there again. But if someone wants to meet at the airport in Eureka I can fly there with my camping gear and metal detector.
