Report A Fireball… Live!

meteorite-maps-avatarWhile I was surfing around the web looking for more information on the latest meteor fireballs I noticed it was very hard to find good info on the latest sightings and what you did find wasn’t much more than “I saw a big fireball in the sky” comments. Other than the reports coming from SpaceWeather.com, Cascadia Meteorite Lab, and a couple other sites, the reports were few and far between. SpaceWeather’s website is a really good start and they seem to have the most up to date info on recent fireballs. You can submit a fireball report to them here: Submit Report to SpaceWeather.com

Even as good as the  reports on SpaceWeather.com are, it was still difficult to quickly locate important info, like GPS coordinates of the location of the sighting, direction of travel, trajectory, time duration, and noises heard if any and so forth. Sure some of the reports had these things in them but they weren’t organized where you could locate the info quickly, and you had to read through all the reports to get a good idea of  some of the more important info like angle of decent.

I’ve created a fireball report form which will give even more information, and have organized it in such a way as to make it easier to read quickly to get a mental image of what was seen. The object of course is to determine if an impact event occured, and if so, where. So to do that you need data. Quality data that will allow you calculate trajectory and trianglate the possible impact site or strewnfield area. Or at the very least give more detailed info to the people who need it fast, like the scientists and other meteorite hunters. The key is quality info fast.

This meteor fireball data is compiled from the form and published LIVE on the site for all to view immediately after someone posts a report of the event taking place. No more waiting for info to trickle down through news reports, emails, and word of mouth.

Email Notification: As a bonus, if you are subscribed to Meteorites USA you will most likely get the info before I do because it’s posted in real time! You can simply subscribe to the feed of the Fireball reports page and be instantly notified via email anytime anyone posts a report.

To make things even better than that I’ve got a special surprise for you guys. But you’ll have to wait for that. I’ll give you a hint. What’s better than real time report info delivered to your email box?

In the meantime BOOKMARK the the Meteorites USA Fireball Report page for future reference because this is one place you’ll want to keep looking up! Every pun intended..

Enjoy…
