What the heck is up with this piece.? Maybe I’m crazy, or I’m missing something or maybe somehow I may have caused this, but I’m completely perplexed as to why this meteorite, that I just cut, seems to have some sort of oily residue seeping out of the stone.
Yes that’s right, oily residue, no it’s not a joke, and hopefully I’m just missing something here and there’s a simple explaination. I cut this stone along with a small batch of other meteorites and laid them all out to dry on the counter. I noticed this film or shiny wetness on it after it sat on the counter for about 20 minutes or so. It still looked wet but all the other stones around it seemed dry. I thought this was from the water from the saw but didn’t make sense, because all the other stones I cut were visually dry.
I picked one piece up and wiped away what I thought was water and it was slick to the touch. I decided not to touch the other half of the stones cut surface and placed them in the oven for drying along with the other stones I cut for about 3 hours at 200+ degrees. Once I pulled all the stones out of the oven this piece still exhibited the oily residue. NONE! I repeat NONE of the other stones showed any signs of wetness or this residue.
What the heck? Does anyone know what might cause this? please comment on the post or send me an email here
You think maybe this piece could have sat in some oil somewhere along it’s journey here to the USA from overseas and when I cut it that released it the oil the it soaked up? It’s the only logical explanation I can think of…
