Meteorite Men – The Dry Lake Bed!

UPDATE: 10:57pm Feb 17th – Just finished watching the show tonight… I must say I’m quite disappointed. I really expected much more from the show than 500+ meteorites and the tiny 699 gram carbonaceous meteorite which is super rare and only the second one found outside of Antarctica. Hmmmph, that’s nothing… Anyone can find 500 meteorites on one hunt right?

Wow Sonny! Congrats on the carbonaceous, You rock! Steve, Geoff you guys kinda rock too… Sonny’s got you beat on this one. ;)

I have to say this is one of the best episodes of the Meteorite Men thus far.

Only one problem. Now you have to top it! Can you do it?

——————————–

The Meteorite Men are on tonight with special guest and professional meteorite hunter Sonny Clary. this promises to be a great show!

Meteorite Men

The Dry Lake Bed, Nevada

TV-PG (L)
Science Channel – 9pm

Dry lake beds are a great place to find new, never before discovered meteorites. The terrain of the bed provides spectacular visuals and high-speed action as the guys cover as much ground as possible, looking for dark rocks against the light colored sand.

Make sure you tune in.

Great show! However what is confusing is that they said at the beginning of the show that the meteorites on this dry lake bed would not be attracted to a magnet. Yet all their finds were attracted to a magnet. Also the site was secret yet they showed it clearly on a map of Nevada at least twice. From what I could see of the map it looks like it’s around the Franklin Dry Lake with the Ruby Mts in the distance to the west. However the map shown could have been just a diversion to throw off treasure hunters. All and all a very good show.

    • admin says:

The “non-magnetic” meteorite they were referring to was the rare 699g carbonaceous meteorite Sonny found before this trip was filmed and he was referring to when he found it. The meteorites found on this trip/show were ordinary chondrites. There was also a small mistake on the show caption that called these meteorites “common chondrites” though technically they are common, the most used term is ordinary chondrite and these type of meteorites typically are in fact magnetic due to their iron content. The carbonaceous meteorite Sonny found before is not. As for the map and the dry lake, well, maybe they did throw in a “fake” map, maybe they didn’t, but the thing is who’s gonna go out there? ;)

  2. Gary says:

Well I know where the lake bed is that they showed on the map and I and a friend are going there this weekend. I’ll let you know if we find anything. Wish I knew who is buying them in case we find some.

    • admin says:

That is if the map they showed was the actual location of the hunt. It’s possible they put that map out there to throw would be meteorite hunters off the trail.

      • KANE says:

I work all over the Great Basin in remote areas. The map they showed is not the place where they were hunting meteorites. Compare the map on Google Earth to the background in the shots. The two do not jive. I have some thoughts as to the actual location based on the terrain of the mountains in the background shots. If anybody else is interested in figuring out this puzzle, please contact me (2 heads are better than 1).

        • Mark says:

Hey Kane, I’m game. Lets figure out where it is. Can’t be too hard to find with google earth.

        • John says:

The thing is, I know close to where they were. If you watch the show you will see the 4-sevens motel in Ely and they filled up at the Sinclair gas station on the Ely Shoshone reservation. I have lived in the area for 10-years, so I know the area like the back of my hand. They tried to hide their location, but to those of us that are familiar with the area, it was obvious where they were; the lake bed they were on was off from Strawberry road.

  3. Gary says:

Well guess I won’t know if they are on the dry lake bed I went to this weekend for a few months. There were 4 inches of snow on the lake bed. Temp was below 20 degrees as I climbed into the sleeping bag in a tent at 8:30 and the same when I climbed out in the morning. It snowed on and off all day and nite. It seems the entire state (except the south) was in a snow storm from the Sierras to the east state line. I’ll go try again when it drys out.

  4. KPTU says:

    Kane,

I just saw the show, today.
I’d be interested in figuring out the location.
Do you live in the Alamo, NV area?

    • Kane says:

      KPTU,

I live in Reno but you will never believe this, I am working in Alamo right now. I will be working here every other week for the next 3 months. Send me an email at kanehell@hotmail.com.

      Kane

    • Gary says:

I live clear down near Yerington, NV it was quite a drive to get there. I want to be sure the weather is good before I go there again. But if someone wants to meet at the airport in Eureka I can fly there with my camping gear and metal detector.

  5. John Harrison says:

I found the lake bed today!! No wher near the google earth location that was demonstated on the episode ( cant blame them for the spoof) I Found 6 metorites in 3 hrs. today walking the lake. If anyone is serious about wanting to no the location pleaese email me at jloharri@hotmail.com I will give you the info on how to get to the dry lake bed its a little tricky to get to however very fun and exciting to find your first metorite!

  6. FRANCOIS says:

    • Al Sanchez says:

Thanks very much for your consideration and help. We thought we knew where we were going but now we’re not sure.

    • Mark says:

Yes, Please tell me how to get there. I live in Phoenix, but would love to come and hunt that spot!

      Mark

    • Tony says:

Francois, is that offer still open ?

    • Tom says:

Hi, I would like to go hunting meteorites some time, what is your e-mail

  7. Bruce says:

I work all over the Great Basin in remote areas. The map they showed is not the place where they were hunting meteorites. Compare the map on Google Earth to the background in the shots. The two do not jive. I have some thoughts as to the actual location based on the terrain of the mountains in the background shots. 8. john says:

    hey

i was just at the spot that they showed on meteorite men and i foungd 47 meteorites plus a huge one!!!!!!!!!!!!

    : )

    • admin says:

Awesome! Good job… Photos? How huge is “HUGE”? ;)

    • John Harrison says:

Were you close to these coords. This is where I have been collecting since March

      39°21’28.10″N

      114°23’45.40″W

      • rockhunterjeff says:

Google earth puts you on some hills or mountains with these co-ordinates, but there is a dry lake bed to the west of them. I would like to check out this area for a few days next spring. Thanks.

        • admin says:

The push pin on the map is simply a marker showing general area, not really meant to show the lake bed location. The meteorite found is called the Yelland Dry Lake meteorite. Classified as an H4 type stone chondrite.

  9. Jan says:

Why OFFER info and then not follow through?

  10. Jack Walker says:

Sonny i’m not sure if you will see this, but I am trying to get in touch with you. We used to run together in Vegas as teenagers, even did some rodeos together. If you happen to see this, email me at imasyone@gmail.com. Old Dan Henry is up here too, and we’d sure like to catch up on some old times.

Congrats on getting on TV… heheh, and you always did have great dogs.

    Jack

  11. Dj Dave says:

I saw that show and was hooked. This spring once weather gets better I would love to go hunting. I would be happy to join any one of you guys if you need company. I would also love to read any more stories that you may have. Please feel free to contact me. I am from Vegas and also spend time in Reno each month. Thanks

  12. Mary Tafuri says:

Is there any danger of flash flooding in dry lake beds in the spring time? I imagine you’d need to be prepared for this. I used to live in NV and drove the state many times over for work. I recall the weather was usually nice, but little flash storms were not uncommon.

  13. Martha Weaver says:

Can anyone go to this dry lake and look for meteorites? Assuming you know where it is.

    • Eric says:

There are lots of people who’ve gone to this dry lake and hunted for meteorites. Many thousands of meteorites have been found on dry lake beds in California, Arizona, and Nevada.

  14. Art says:

So where do you sell that crap if you find it ??

  15. Joe says:

What was the large rock that they had cut and polished? What was the name of the outcropping they found that contained this rock. I remember it sounded like some spanish name but can’t remember. They carried this huge rock for a pretty good distance and took it to a stone cutter and had it cut and polished. In the program they mentioned that on the other side of the mountain road ahead was area 51. Wish I lived closer to Arizona, and out west, to go there and rock hound a bit, but being on the east coast not something that I would be able to do on a fun weekend!
