Update on the Merced Meteor Fireball. Apparently there’s more to this meteor than meets the eye. Many people from all over northern California have reported the Dec 27th 2008 fireball and now meteorite hunter Robert Ward is looking for more info and video footage of this meteor to triangulate the meteors trajectory in the hopes of finding new meteorites.
It’s possible this meteor actually impacted the ground making it a meteorite. Being able to triangulate the meteors trajectory from multiple points is very important in determining the location of a meteorite fall, and if this piece hit the ground that would make this the newest meteorite fall in the United States.
Meteorite hunters from all over are looking closely at this report right now researching everything they can to find out whether it’s worth pursuing. Until more information is available it unlikely anyone will rush to the scene. It’s very possible this is one very big fireworks show but with no material hitting the ground. Time will tell…
