FIREBALL SIGHTING: Meteor Streaks Across Southern California!

A big fireball was seen over southern California last night be science school teacher Doug Peltz from Irvine CA.

A good sign there may be material on the ground is that Peltz actually heard a crackling sound as it flew over. One witness stated he saw it all the way from Las Vegas. 9 other witnesses have reported seeing this fireball as well.

We’re investigating the fireball event and are trying to determine whether there were any meteorites that might have fallen. If you have any information, surveillance video, photos or would like to report what you saw, please cant us immediately at 760-522-2152 or email us.

Peltz said in an email that, “At 9:39 p.m. (Sunday, Jan. 10), from East Irvine (Portola Springs), I just witnessed the brightest fireball I’ve ever seen! It lit up the whole sky, such that my wife at first thought it was lightning.

“Definitely bright blue in color, and it streaked from between Castor & Pollux (Gemini) and Mars. Tracing the path backwards, it seemed to me that its radiant point was perhaps the constellation Auriga. I even heard a crackling sound as it streaked.

If you saw the fireball, let us know in the Comments section. Click here to send  an email to Peltz, who is academic director of the science and geography program at LePort.

Has anyone located this thing yet? is there any info about direction and possible impact sites?

I know this post is old but I have been looking online forever trying to figure out about this stuff I found. I happen to see the meteorite fall too, it landed pretty close to my house. I could see the impact area so I went out looking and found a hole the size of a pool about 8 feet deep. It was still pretty hot when I got there and I was able to get what looked like glass where it hit. There were other people there grabbing what they could too but there is still some there. I also found what could be good size pieces of meteorites too. I contacted the show meteorite men and sent pictures of the ipaxt glass I got where it hit, they said it was glass and nothing else, even though I watched it happen. I still have what I collected and know where the impact hole still is. I am moving in a week so I need to be contacted asap from Aug 22nd 2011.
