This Canyon Diablo meteorite is my second favorite in my collection. I own a few but this one is very nice indeed. It’s sculptured shape make it especially fantastic. I kept this one natural for some time, but after having it in my collection for a while I decided to clean it.
Some people would diagree with this because they like the orangish brown natural desert look of the patina, and normally I would agree, but I had it in my collection for over a year before I decided to clean it. Besides left untreated it was starting to rust and I didn’t have a display case for it.
Canyon Diablo Iron Meteorites For Sale
At the time of this writing it is the largest meteorite in my personal collection. I’ve owned many that are larger but most have been traded or sold to other collectors to buy more meteorites for my collection and finance meteorite hunting trips.
The Canyon Diablo iron meteorite is perhaps one of the most famous meteorites in the world. They come from the world famous and best preserved meteorite crater on the planet Barringer Crater. Better known as meteor crater. The crater is some 550ft+ feet deep and 4000ft in diameter.
The rim of the crater stands some 150ft above the surrounding desert floor. In other words it’s big. But not as big as some craters on this planet The Chicxulub Crater in the Gulf of Mexico is estimated to be around 150 miles wide and is thought to be the reason for the extinction of the dinosaurs. Now that’s a big crater.
The Barringer crater isn’t quite that big but it’s very impressive in it’s own right. As craters go it’s one of the largest on Earth, and perhaps the youngest as well at only 50,000 years old. Impact events like this are thought to be rare, but it’s possible it could happen as often as onces every 1000 years. If that’s true then we are long over due for an impact like this one.
This meteorite impact produced so much energy that it’s said to have laid waste to everything within a 7-10 mile radius, and hurricane force winds from he concussion blast could be felt some 25 miles away. The enourmous energy released during an impact event such as this would lay waste to a big city. Imagine if Manhatten Island in New York was struck by a meteor this size. It would flatten the entire island and probably kill every living thing within 5 miles of the impacts center. But this is highly unlikely. You would probably have a better chance of winning the lottery, 10 times in a row than a meteorite this size impacting a big city.
The Canyon Diablo Iron Meteorite is made of nickel iron. It is an iron octahedrite meteorite
Regardless, if you have never been to Meteor Crater you must go sometime in your life. It’s a great experience to witness the size of this crater first hand. It gives you an idea of how smalle we really are. The pictures in this article don’t do it justice. It’s something you just have to experience yourself. In the meantime you can look at this video I took from the craters edge back in 2007. If you’re really into this whole meteorite thing you can actually buy a Canyon Diablo meteorite right here on Meteorites USA. They are great collection starters are awesome meteorites, and are perhaps one of the most highly collected iron meteorites on the planet.
