I am posting a comment about this sighting in 1960. It sounds exactly like the same one I saw as a young child. My brother and I were with my Mom at a local laundromat. My mother was inside, no one was around and we were in the very small town of Thousand Oaks (pop. ~10,000). My brother was younger than I and we walked outside the laundromat and were playing on the sidewalk in front looking around and checking out the store front next door. We looked up because of this bright light and there it was... like nothing I have seen before or since. It was a huge burning ball of fire. It looked like what was described above. About the size of a golf ball in the sky. We could see the flames and the trail it left was sparkling with burnt orange pieces it moved across the entire sky. It went from east to west and looked as if it would land in the Pacific Ocean near the Channel Islands off of Oxnard, CA. I vividly remember two things:

1. The color was bright white and orange and I could see flames and sparks coming off of it.
2. We could hear a swishing noise without a sonic boom.

My brother and I went in and alerted our Mother about what had just happened and she told us it was probably a falling star. There wasn't a green like trail left afterwards like so many rockets and missiles witnessed from the Vandenberg AFB up north.

I do believe this to be a fireball and have never waivered in my vision of what I saw and that has been 50 years ago. It was quite something to see as 4 year old kid and I am sure I will never forget it. I would love to see another one in my lifetime because it was truly amazing.

I will be going on my fireball recovery expedition at the end of this month . I seen it go by and I found it many years latter. Time to start gathering at the small end of the strewn field ,said to be one of the largest most densely covered ever found. Guess that makes me a meteorite man too?

I aquired a rock last year from the home of an elderly person that passed away and left all to my mother. The rock was sitting on a mantle and when I picked it up the first thing that stood out was how extra heavy this rock was. I have been looking at pics from websites and have done all but the magnet test. I know that the persons husband was in the Army back in the early 40s and did some tours in Africa and Japan and wonder if it is a meteroite? I did not see a link to e mail some pics too so any help by anyone would be appreciated. If its not its not but its a cool rock anyway , thanks for any assistance.

Hello, for the last two yrs i have been doing research on meteorites. While living in Ga. hunting arrow heads, i came across a rock that really stood out. I picked it up an noticed it was quite dense. Also had a shiny smooth crust with tiny bubbles covering it. the bottom side had destinct flow marks, like it had been really super heated. I took it to a few colleges and one museum. They all agreed it was different but no one could tell me what it was. I really got discouraged when i found that a magnet was not attracted to it. Until further research told me that not all meteorites are magnetic. Id very much like to send pictures and get your opinion. It weighs about thirty lbs and is a little bigger than a soft ball, the in side is a rusty brown with some hints of yellow and greenish. Could this be a Lunar or Martian meteorite. I now reside in Wisconsin and have become quite the meteor hound. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

I forgot to mention that our pieces have alot of burnt crust on them. What does this mean? Does it help tell what part of the big piece they came from? And also This is not a joke we really did find that many and the next time we are up that way I am going to metal detect the area because I know there is much more from the concentration we found. At that point I will give G.P.S. tag for youre map. Thanks

Me, My wife and our 5 year old boy (at that time) were in Richland Center Wi the day after and my son found 33 pieces totaling about a quarter pound This is the first I have wrote about it. Pretty lucky find huh. Especially when we live 1100 miles away on the Gulf Coast.
